Your First Crochet Project: A Beginner's Guide

Your First Crochet Project: A Beginner's Guide

Welcome to the Cosy Cottage Co. blog! Whether you've always wanted to learn crochet or you've just picked up your first hook, this guide is for you. Crochet is one of those wonderfully cosy crafts that's easier to start than you might think — and incredibly rewarding once you do.

What You'll Need

  • A crochet hook — We recommend a 4mm hook for beginners. It's a comfortable size to hold and easy to work with.
  • Yarn — Choose a smooth, light-coloured DK or Aran weight yarn so you can easily see your stitches.
  • Scissors and a yarn needle for finishing off.

Your First Stitch: The Chain

Every crochet project starts with a foundation chain. Here's how:

  1. Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.
  2. Hold the hook in your dominant hand and the yarn in your other hand.
  3. Wrap the yarn over the hook (called a "yarn over") and pull it through the loop on your hook.
  4. That's one chain stitch! Repeat to make a row of chains.

Next Steps: The Single Crochet

Once you're comfortable with chains, try the single crochet stitch — the building block of most beginner projects like dishcloths, scarves, and coasters.

  1. Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook.
  2. Yarn over and pull up a loop (you'll have 2 loops on your hook).
  3. Yarn over again and pull through both loops.
  4. That's one single crochet! Continue across your chain.

Tips for Beginners

  • Don't worry if your tension is uneven at first — it improves with practice.
  • Count your stitches at the end of each row to make sure you haven't accidentally added or dropped any.
  • Take breaks! Crochet should be relaxing, not stressful.
